This house, on historic Brattle Street in Cambridge MA was built in the late 1800s. It had not had any significant work done since the 1950s. This job was a total gut remodel including additions. We removed a large 1950s addition from the back of he house and built another larger addition which was historically accurate to the original design. All the details of the original house were fabricated and installed, including pediments and trim at windows and dormers, custom - made period window sash with brass chains and weights, custom panel doors, eave trim and deck and rail details. A complete new slate and copper roof was installed.
The existing ceiling height in the basement was under seven feet. We excavated down to a new finished height of ten feet in order to accommodate a family room, wine cellar and gymnasium. The entire existing basement foundation, which was comprised of large granite blocks, had to be kept in place while we excavated below and then poured concrete underneath them to extend the foundation to a new lower footing ( underpinning ).
A new garage, with a basement which houses a large back - up generator was built to match the details of the house. The driveways and walkways are all heated to melt snow.
The interior of the house is has magnificent finishes, including inlaid floors, marble casings in the bathrooms, two new staircases, oak paneling, a library completely finished in matched walnut paneling, a conservatory and large mud room. The large sitting rooms and dining rooms have very large custom pocket doors. Two new chimneys and seven fireplaces were constructed. This home was recently featured on the cover of Design New England.
