This side-by-side two family home near Observatory Hill in Cambridge was lifted nearly two feet above its original height, due to the presence of a high water table, a low basement ceiling, and a deteriorated foundation wall. The entire structure was jacked up, the old fieldstone foundation was removed, and a new poured concrete foundation was installed. French drains now divert the water under the new basement slab to exterior drywells and distribution boxes. The entire house – both the owner’s unit and the rental unit – was renovated inside and out. A new wood burning zero-clearance fireplace was installed in the library with custom hearth, mantel, and surround. Another interesting feature is an artist’s studio with vertical storage for paintings. Project was designed by Mills Whitaker Architects.
