Federal Style Restoration

Cambridge, MA

Project Participants:

Architect: Chris Dallmus of Design Associates

We performed a large restoration and addition to this historic Federal Style home near Harvard Square in Cambridge. A series of old additions were removed from the back of the house and new structure was added, with a garage below and bedrooms above. The exterior of the home was carefully restored, with the advice of the Cambridge Historical Commission. Original clapboards and siding were saved and restored as much as possible.

The building had been used as a rooming house for many decades and was in a high level of disrepair. We rebuilt the main staircase to match the early 19th century details. Hand hewn beams were exposed and highlighted at the 3rd floor level. Interior shutters were restored and made operable. A new master suite, kitchen, living area, and bathrooms were completed, bringing this beautiful older home up to modern living standards. The S + H Landscape & Site Work Division installed a long aggregate driveway bordered with brick, a waterfall, and various walkways. We continue to maintain and modify this home for the new owners.
